Get started with quitting for surgery

IMPORTANT TIPS FOR YOUR SURGERY:

1.  Tell your surgeons and anesthesiologists that you smoke. Your doctors can help you quit before your surgery so that the procedure can go as smoothly and safely as possible.

2.  Reduce your smoking as far in advance as possible. Studies show that quitting for two months can lower your risk of complications almost as low as a non-smoker!

3. Ask for help quitting. Nicotine is extremely addictive and most people struggle as they quit. Tell your friends and family you are quitting for surgery so that they can support you.

4. Do not smoke for one month after your surgery. To allow your body to heal after your procedure, try not to smoke! Smoking prevents oxygen from reaching your operation site and can jeopardize the recovery process.

Remember:     Just like you should fast from food the morning of surgery,

you should also fast from cigarettes!
